Sources of Law Grants in the United States

Studying law could be very expensive in the United States, especially if the student is enrolled in a world class college or university. However, bright students planning to take up law need not worry because there are several law grant opportunities. Law students could ask for a law grant from several sources such as the government, law universities, professional law organizations and private sources.

There are many law schools which offer such grants. The Washington College of Law funds students who are pursuing their Doctor of Law degree or Juris Doctor (JD) degree. The JD degree is a professional doctorate and could be a stepping point for a further law specialty. Another school offering a law grant is the Columbia School of Law. The Columbia School of Law, one of the top law schools in the country, is providing financial support to its law students. Other schools offering financial aid to law students are the University of Michigan and Cornell University. Such law schools are able to provide grants and other financial aids to their students because of charitable donations they are receiving from other people or organizations. Such alumni gifts could be used for giving scholarship or grants to qualified students.

Students can also ask for a law grant from private organizations. One of these popular organizations is the American Bar Association (ABA). ABA is not only the largest voluntary professional organization in the United States but also in the world. It provides services in all aspects of the legal profession. Because its mission is to support and improve the profession, it offers financial aid to law students, in particular those who are coming from the low income bracket and the minority ones. ABA has already awarded thousands of dollars in grants to law students enrolled in minority schools. The organization is supporting minority groups such as African Americans, Native Americans and Hispanics in their quest to search for law school funding. With its efforts, ABA aims to help diversify the field of law which is currently being dominated by white and male people. Another group supporting the education of law students in the United States is the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund. The organization is offering financial support to Latino students who are taking up a JD program at any law school affiliated with ABA.
To be eligible for a law grant, a student must prove that he or she needs financial assistance to pursue a law course or degree. A student must request an application from the organization and submit the form together with other requirements. Each organization may have different criteria for approving the grant. Thus, it is a good idea to make sure that the student will meet the required criteria so as not to waste time. There are many resources in the Internet where students could look for a law grant.
